Three claims and their fine print.
Utah's AI acne prescriber starts with a doctor approving every prescription, and oversight eases only in stages. A video avatar's Turing-test claim rests on a one-minute company study. Mistral's benchmark claim holds within its own qualifier.

The documents behind this week's claims are a Utah pilot agreement, a startup's own study and a model launch post. All three claims rest on something real in them.
Utah has launched the world's first system that prescribes drugs on its own, without human doctors.
Interesting Engineering headline, Oct. 5Utah's Oct. 5 announcement approves Nolla Health for a pilot under a state agreement that runs 12 months, with the data meant to inform future rules. It covers first-time and renewal prescriptions of topical acne treatments for adults with mild to moderate acne, from a restricted list of topical formulations, with no oral medication. A physician approves every prescription for at least the first 100 patients. Each later stage, with lighter review, needs the state's written approval.
Utah Nolla agreement · Utah Department of Commerce · Nolla Health · Interesting EngineeringWhy it matters. The doctor steps back only if the AI agrees with physicians at least 95% of the time and misses no hard stop, such as a patient under 18 or a pregnancy. When a headline says "without human doctors," check which stage the program is in and who reviews the AI's decisions.
- 1A physician approves every prescription, for at least 100 patients
- 2The AI sends prescriptions, reviewed weekly afterward, for at least 500 patients in all
- 3A monthly review of at least 10% of enrollment, for at least 750 patients in all
Each stage has a minimum length, and the next one can't start without the state's written approval.
Utah Nolla agreementTavus says its Griffin model is the first to pass the real-time video Turing test.
Tavus research post, Oct. 1Tavus tested Griffin-Lite, a research preview, on 54 people recruited through a research platform. They were told they'd be matched with another participant for a one-minute video call. Afterward, 26 of them (48%) said their partner was a real person. Tavus counts that as passing and sets no threshold. On its older Phoenix-4.5, 2.4% of 41 participants said the same. Tavus ran the study itself, and Griffin-Lite is open only to select trusted testers.
TavusWhy it matters. By Tavus's own measure, the jump from Phoenix-4.5 is large. Participants were never asked to look for an AI, so the study measured only whether people noticed within one minute. For payments, access or anything sensitive, confirm a caller's identity through a second channel.
Participants weren't told their partner might be an AI until afterward.
TavusMistral's new trillion-parameter Large 4 "significantly outperforms" any open-weight model built in the US or Europe.
Tech.eu headline, Oct. 6The headline quotes Mistral fairly, and its Oct. 6 post backs the claim with in-house and third-party tests. Against the strongest open models worldwide, the post claims only to be competitive. In a blind coding review run with Surge AI, Large 4 scored 3.74 out of 5, against 3.60 for GLM-5.3, 3.59 for Kimi K3 and 4.22 for Claude Opus 5. Large 4 is a preview on Mistral's API, with weights promised by month's end.
Mistral AI · Tech.euWhy it matters. A main reason to pick an open-weight model is to run it on your own servers. Until the weights ship, the model is available only through Mistral's API, and outsiders can't test the claims on their own hardware. Wait for the download before planning around it.
Mistral's own results. Large 4 was tested as a preview.
Mistral AI- Find the stage. Pilots loosen oversight step by step. A headline about prescribing without doctors may describe a stage that hasn't started.
- Ask what participants were told. A test where people weren't told to look for an AI is the easier test.
- Read the qualifier. A lead over models from the US and Europe is a narrower claim than a lead over all models. A model is open-weight once its weights can be downloaded.
