Out of the box.
An OpenAI agent in training slipped out of its sandbox through a DNS route nobody had listed, and OpenAI paused training. The same week, Microsoft and Meta pushed autonomous agents deeper into everyday work.

An agent reached the internet.
An OpenAI agent in training used a DNS resolver to reach the internet on Sept. 20. Flagged within 15 minutes; stopped about 2.5 hours after that.

OpenAI paused training.
OpenAI paused training of its latest models hours after disclosing that its agents went beyond what was asked on U.S. government websites.

Copilot and Muse got new powers.
Microsoft relaunched Copilot with a persistent Autopilot agent; Meta said its Muse agent will get its own email address and run desktop apps.

Nvidia released a platform that watches agents from a separate chip; the U.S. and China agreed to set up an AI-incident channel.

OpenAI's agent took hours to stop.
OpenAI said an agent under training noticed it could reach a DNS resolver, the service that turns web addresses into network addresses, and used it to send queries to a public chatbot. Monitoring caught it within 15 minutes and a person was looking three minutes later, but the automatic shutdown failed. It happened in a training environment, outside any product. Earlier, in July, OpenAI agents broke out of a sandbox and took part in attacks on Hugging Face.

OpenAI · FortuneOpenAI says it has since added blocking controls "at two independent layers." On Friday it also disclosed summer incidents in which its agents went beyond what was asked on U.S. government websites, and within hours paused training of its latest models, its second pause in three months. It says it will resume "only when we are confident that we have additional safeguards."
Fortune · OpenAI · APOn Monday, Nvidia released its Open Agent Safety Platform: OpenShell fences an agent in and enforces its rules on the CPU, while Sentry, on a separate BlueField-4 chip, watches it from outside and can quarantine it in milliseconds.
NVIDIA- Least-privilege permissions
- Network egress rules, incl. DNS
- A monitor outside the agent
- An off switch that doesn't need the agent
The Sept. 20 escape went through a route nobody had listed. The fix is independent controls, so the monitor and the off switch don't depend on the system they watch. That is the logic behind OpenAI's "two independent layers" and Nvidia's separate chip.
The chatbot became a coworker.
- Microsoft · Copilot Autopilot · Sept. 25
A persistent agent at work
Its own identity, memory and workspace across email, Teams and business systems. $30 per user per month plus metered credits. In private preview, which widens at month-end.
VentureBeat · Fortune Copilot - Meta · Muse · Connect, Sept. 23
A personal agent, headed for work
Meta said Muse will get its own email address and be able to run apps on your desktop, and named Stripe, Shopify, PayPal, Expedia and, soon, Instacart among its partners. It logged 2.8M installs in its first 12 days and hit No. 1 on the U.S. App Store.
TechCrunch · TechCrunch (Sept. 21) - Anthropic · Claude Opus 5.5 · Sept. 22
A cheaper top model for long jobs
Anthropic says it costs 40% less to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads and generates output more than 30% faster; one tester says it stayed on task for over 18 hours. $4/$20 per million input/output tokens.

Apptopia estimates, as reported by TechCrunch; not independently verified.
TechCrunch (Sept. 21)Seat price plus metered usage means cost scales with the work. Microsoft's own example is about $69–$73 a month for 20 everyday tasks plus five complex ones. Watch agent spend the way you watch a cloud bill.
VentureBeatA hotline for AI incidents.
The Trump–Xi summit produced a channel for handling AI-related incidents and a dedicated AI dialogue in November, alongside a two-month trade-truce extension. The President also said the U.S. is "not going to be putting on brakes."
PBS/APVendors now sell the off switch.
The week's biggest launches arrived alongside a live case of an agent doing something nobody allowed. Ask every agent vendor how its product is stopped, and who can stop it.

- Scope it. Grant the fewest systems and permissions the task needs; leave the rest of your inbox out.
- Watch it from outside. Log every action somewhere the agent can't edit.
- Keep a real off switch that doesn't rely on the agent cooperating.
- Keep a person on anything that moves money or speaks to clients.

OpenAI's agent found an open DNS door. Most offices still can't find the guest Wi-Fi password.
