Held at the gate.
OpenAI pulled a new model a day before DevDay after it fell short on staying within its permissions, then launched agents that run around the clock. Google held its own new model back too. Both now treat who gets a model, and when, as a safety control.

OpenAI pulls a model, ships dots.
On Monday, Sept. 28, a day before its developer conference, OpenAI called off the planned October release of GPT-6.1 Astra. Saachi Jain, its head of safety systems, said the model "didn't quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization." Australian Associated Press reported that internal testing found it did not meet the company's safety and alignment standards. Training of OpenAI's most advanced models was already paused.

The next day, at DevDay in San Francisco, OpenAI launched dots: always-on agents in ChatGPT, each with its own cloud computer and browser, running on the current GPT-6 Astra and able to connect to more than 4,000 apps. When you aren't working with one, a dot does what OpenAI calls proactive research through read-only tools, so it can't send messages, change what's in your apps or control your computer. Custom Rules let you allow an action, require approval for it or block it.
OpenAI dots · Fast Company- Built-in safety requirements, always applied
- Read-only tools while you're away
- Custom Rules: require approval
- Custom Rules: block
Away from you, a dot uses read-only tools and can't send, edit or control anything. Custom Rules decide which other actions it may take, which need your approval and which are blocked. Write them before you connect your first app.
OpenAI dotsGoogle limited its own release on Sept. 30. Gemini 4 Argon, which Google says can find, validate and patch critical software vulnerabilities on its own, went first to "trusted cyber defenders" in its Fairwind Program. Google says monitors watch the model's reasoning and actions and can stop it, and that wider access, starting with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers, waits until guardrail testing is done.
GoogleAstra fell short on staying inside the permissions a person set, a limit every workplace agent has to respect. Dots handle it with read-only background work and rules you write. Google handles it by choosing who gets the model first.

- OpenAI · GPT-6.1 Sol · Sept. 29
A cheaper model for agents and code
In ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users. $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output, one-fifth of Astra's standard prices. A faster Ultrafast version is due "in the coming days."
OpenAI Sol · Fast Company - Anthropic · Claude Sonnet 5.5 · Sept. 28
The everyday Claude, improved for agent work
A faster, cheaper companion to Opus 5.5 for scoped tasks, bug fixes and documents. Same $2/$10 per million tokens as Sonnet 5; Anthropic reports large gains on agentic coding and computer use.
Anthropic - Google · Skills in Gemini · Sept. 30
Reusable instructions you can stack
Skills are saved instructions that work inline in a chat, and they use the open SKILL.md format, so skills made elsewhere carry over. Google said Workspace rollout starts Oct. 5. Gems keep working for now.

AnthropicSol, Sonnet 5.5 and Gemini 4 Argon's introductory rate all list at $2 in and $10 out per million tokens. When prices match, pick on how a model behaves in your own work, and test it there.
OpenAI Sol · Anthropic · GoogleCalifornia keeps a person in the loop.
On Sept. 29, leaders of Anthropic, Google, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI and xAI signed a voluntary accord with President Trump. They pledged "robust internal controls," an "independent external auditor" to check them and a board committee to review the audits. The accord says it "may make sense" to write the steps into law over time. The President said he saw "tremendous self-policing" from the companies.
AP · Al JazeeraA day later, an FTC spokesperson confirmed an investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over risks to consumers, and California's governor signed 13 AI bills. One, SB 947, bars employers from relying on an automated system alone to discipline or fire workers; it takes effect July 1, 2027. The governor said AI should expand opportunity, "not come at the expense of workers and families."
ITV News · California Governor · TNW (California)Companies now stage who gets a model.
OpenAI kept one model in the lab and limited its agents' background work to reading. Google chose which users went first. Anyone deploying AI at work should write down what the system may do before a person approves it.
What to watch
- Mon 10/5
Skills reach Workspace
Google's schedule has Rapid Release domains getting skills from today, finishing by Oct. 12.
- This week
Sol gets faster
OpenAI said GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast arrives in the coming days, with up to 8x faster output in Codex.
- Ongoing
OpenAI's training pause
Still no restart date. Watch for the safeguards it said must come first, and for any new date for Astra.
- Coming weeks
FTC demands
Formal civil investigative demands to the companies are expected, according to TNW's account of the probe.
- Wed 10/14
GPT-5.5 leaves Codex
For users signed in with ChatGPT, at noon Pacific. Switch saved settings and scripts before then.
- Write the rules first. Before a dot or any agent touches an app, decide what it may do alone, what needs your approval and what's blocked.
- Start read-only. Let it watch and draft before it sends or edits anything.
- Check which model you're on. New defaults and retirements arrive weekly; note the one each workflow uses.
- Keep a person on decisions about people. In California, employers won't be able to discipline or fire on an automated system's output alone.
“We have an extremely high bar in terms of safety and alignment.”

Before you go
- Release
OpenAI's newest model was held back for not staying in scope. Plenty of project plans have the same problem.
- Agents
Dots work 24/7 and can't send messages while you're away. Some coworkers would call that ideal.
- Pricing
Sol, Sonnet 5.5 and Argon all list at $2 in and $10 out. Price comparisons got shorter.
